Is it possible to get one for under $1000? I know a guy that bought one for 500....but he had to be towed out once. Bwahahaha

*I really hate the loud piercing ring-a-ding-ring. I have liked the sound of most i've ridden with tho.

**I really think this is a taboo subject and should be in off topic. LOL!

Loud? Four strokes are way louder than two smokers. Just keep your eyes peeled on craigs list. Most anything that isn't a dual sport, would make a good dedicated trail machine.

Ahh, my CR250 was way louder then my bike or any other 4 stroke i have heard ! for strokes may have better lower tones but the ringy ding ding is louder on a 2 stroke. but i like the sound of both so sound would not be my deciding factor.

i have been seeing some older smokers come up on CL. they have been early 90's or older. for less then $1000.00 they dont seem to be on there long. as far as the 4 strokes, the 80's are hard to find it seems like and when you do find one they want a small fortune for them.

I know, this post wasnt much help ! if i see anything i will let ya know

(P.S. Katoom, you should come over and check out my beer fridge when i get it full !)

2 strokes sound waves are shorter and this makes them higher pitched and they don't carry far. 4 stroke sound waves are longer and lower pitched, letting them carry farther, thus making them louder. Don't argue with me.

No, I'm ok, kinda want one, with the 2 stroke. Just saying that I've run into a couple that had expansion chambers or something. High pitched and loud hurts the ears.

Murry...yeah, something like that. Sounds like that one needs a lot of work tho

Use searchtempest.com to search CL by zipcode. And just put "bike" in the keywords box with a max price of 1000. You'll come up with stuff :)

I am a CL whore. CONSTANTLY on it. I'm on it right now :)

Hmmmm you might be right in theory but my 1985 YZ490 could be heard over a mile away no joke. I had to wear ear plugs and no one wanted to follow me. I really miss the power and the light front end.

Only problem I see with a cheap older bike is if some thing major breaks it may be cheaper to just buy another as the parts really add up in cost. I had a 1983 IT175 that I gave to my brother and ended up getting it back five years later with a cracked gas tank, rim, rear fender, tail light ect.... I spent like $700 to fix it up to sell and sold it for $1000. Should have just sold it for $300 and been done with it.

Whats the matter Kevin, you getting tired of beating up that pretty WR? I had nothing to do with it Fib Keep a eye out for KDX 200 or 220, I have seen a few mid 90 KDX's show up now and then, also seen a few RMX 250's out there. Might want to shy away from the motocross bikes.

My grandson has a Honda 80 and a KTM SX 60. Guess which one is REALLY loud. You can hear it coming a half mile up the trail.

1996 KTM300exc...$800??

*emailed the guy but he wants me to call instead. Sucks that he's down in Lewis County, that's a couple hours away and a huge chunk of change in gas money. Haven't called yet.

If it's a good deal spending $75 bucks in gas will make up for buying $200 in parts on another bike.

I had a 97 300exc, it was a good bike. last year of link suspension. It was a fast bike and it liked to be short shifted to keep it out of the meat and me on the seat. Never left me stranded. I don't miss that butterscotch plastic though lol. If its a runner $800 sounds worth the drive. If I were thinking second bike like you are and in your price range I would still be looking for a 95 or newer KDX (perimeter frame). Not sure how easy parts are going to be on a 96 KTM.

I like the color! Looked around and parts still seem aplenty.

but i appreciate the rest of it...I just may keep looking than, i'm very lazy on the shifting

*I thought that with that older of a bike I wouldn't have to worry so much about the power

Thats one thing about the 300, ya don't need to shift it much, makes plenty of torque.
