GoPro Positioning

What seems to be the best place to mount the camera? Top or side of helmet? Does the sticky mount really hold? What resolution do most of you use? Any tips or suggestions would be helpful.

The sticky tape mount work fantastic. They hold the camera at speeds over 150. I tryed the helmet thing once and hated it. I ended up putting it on the side of my bike. If you have fairing, they hold very well. Or a bar mount also works well.

I like the top of the helmet view combined with the wide angle mode. It's important to keep some of the bike in the frame to give the viewer a frame of reference, otherwise you quickly loose interest in watching it.

For this reason I love the chest mount! I hate having the visor in view because it's always super stationary while the rest of the frame jiggles about. Never looked right to me. I'm also a fan of strapping it to your boot - see the front wheel moving and the trail up ahead, and sometimes a rider in front of you. I am actually into sticking it all kinds of weird places. We put one on my brother facing backward in Mexico. Kind of cool... Ideally if you could mount it up under the Leatt's front it would be the perfect spot, but there's not quite enough room there. I saw a guy mount it to the bottom of his visor, but you gotta have the visor up really high or the GoPro would be in your line of sight...

Remember you can mount it upside down too. There's a setting to change to tell the camera you're filming upside down so when you put the file on your computer it will be right-side up and you won't have to worry about flipping it. That opens up more places to stick it!

Enough about mounting...

Use the 720p 30fps for regular everyday stuff. Bump it to 960 or higher if you plan on making a video to watch on your TV and spend time editing otherwise the 720 is fine. If you want to do slow motion (edit the video), set it to record 720/60fps.

Just get creative and have fun with it. If you want to get fancy with editing you can buy an older version of Sony Vegas studio for like $60 and it's VERY capable software with only a small learning curve. Not as powerful as some of the other super zoot softwares out there, but it gets the job done and price tag is nice. You can even download a 30 day trial from Sony and test out the software (read: make a free video) before you buy it.

Thanks for all the input! I think I will try the top of the helmet mount first as I don't normally where a chest protector to attach anything to. Also think I want the camera to see what I'm seeing if I turn my head to watch Reinrod fly off the road! Hope to get out and try it soon but the weather has been stormy, non stop up here for a while. I actually prefer the cheek mount, or one side of the full face. The Top is too high, the chest is too low, the full face is just right.

Me and Mouse McCoy seem to be the only one's that prefer the full face mt.

This is the guy that found Mouse when he crashed at night and then lead him in. You can see his aux helmet lamps mounted about where I was talking about on his helmet. Not a great shot, but all I have so far.

Put a sticky on the chinbar of your helmet and mount the GP that way! That's another good spot. Forgot about that. I did see a guy that mounted his where the helmet mouth piece goes, but it looked like a lot of work. He had a custom thing going on. Looked good though!

Or buy a DriftHD... Less work to mount! It's flatter. Plus you can have like 6 and remote start them all at once...probably going to get one of those next!

The chest mount does seem to work well...might have to figure something out there....

Seeing the 650L handle its own makes me think I need to try walker out....

I certainly don't want to dampen your enthusiasm, but maybe double check that; I think he rides his xr 250 at Walker. But check with him. And they do make a chest mount harness.

Dammit. Still looks doable. I'll scope out the chest mount. In the mean time ill go the helmet route....

Ben, Chris just posted that his is actually a homemade chin mount. He mounted it to his helmet full face with a piece of aluminium that he cut to fit.



I thought that perspective looked better than the chest mounts I rememberred. That extra 1' of height does a lot for the perspective. IMO.

Yondering also did a fullface mount on a spare helmet of his. Ask him how he likes it.



And yeah, WV is very doable on a BRP...just a bit more of a work out. But you are studly and can handle it. It would be like mucking in the corners with Chris Pronger or Shea Weber; You'll get your ass handed to you a lot and you will fall down a bit, but you'll be smiling all the way to Skagit River Brewery when you're done.

Lots of good info in this thread! My girls got me a GoPro2HD for Christmas... still tryin to figure out the best place to mount it.

I'm going to order some curved mounts for my lid, & maybe the LED screen for the back..

Dunno where on the helmet, but I see the guy holding the helmet (see his shadow anyway), and it's not on top and it doesn't appear to be on the sides.

I'll correct my earlier inch statement...

The extra 7"-12" makes a big difference for clearing your mom. I mean the bars.

I was actually thinking of below your chin or above the Leatt. I'm going to blame the cold meds...

anyway, Walker is doable on an XR650L, but you more or less just hang on for the ride and hammer down. The first part of twisted tree was really tough. I went with stock gearing and it was a pain.. next time I am going to gear down to a 13T front and it should be much easier.
