Looking at buying my first dual sport bike for on and off road use. Never owned one but have experience with off road bikes (years ago) and currently ride a 2014 Ninja 1000.
I love my street bike so I'm not getting rid of it. What I want is something I can ride on the street but take off on trails here and there. Not looking to spend more than 3k and I have found a nice 01 DRZ400 or a nice 09 KLX 250. The DRZ is set up with 17" road tires and the KLX is ready to go off road. Is the KLX too small for steer use if I wanna travel 100 miles to get off road? Just looking for some input from experienced riders.

Never ridden either bike.  My hunch is you will quickly grow bored with the 250.  There are plenty of people that have them that go everywhere they want with em though.

My first DS was a WRR250 and it was awesome.  Did everything i wanted it to.  Got tired of beating it up on the tight trails so bought a real dirt bike.  That thing beat the hell out of me so upgraded to the Beta.  Could not go back to a street oriented DS now.

HELL!! I'm of no help.

*honestly if it was me.  I'd go with the KLX because it is ready to go.  Knowing what i know now...I'd also be looking to upgrade in a couple of years though.

I'D take the KLX because its newer.   Do you got a Kawa shop close by.   I ride with a 74 year old now and then who rips it up on a stock KLX 250. I only hope I can be doing that at his age.   Just jump in and buy one400 or 250 14208 and don't look back.   If you are going hard core on single track you might get bored eventually, but if its just DS riding and exploring that's a great bike.
