I have a friend who has a 99 SV650 now and wants to get something for off road and on road

He likes the BMW GS 650 style bike with the bags etc

What is the best bike for on/off road based on your experiences?

Mark

That and "which beer is best" are the great unanswered questions in life.

Some general info might help narrow the vast selection of dual sports down to a reasonable few.
Most of these apply to the beer question as well.

Budget
Riding style (aggresive jumping,normal, mellow)
Rider height/weight
Passenger pegs/luggage rack desired
% of off road vs. pavement
Rider mechanical inclination
Estimated annual mileage

The best bike is the one you have. Many have used the SV650 for gravel roads. It's light and handles well. With the right tires and gearing, and maybe a handlebar change, that bike should be great for gravel roads and even easy dirt roads. There are luggage options for the SV650 as well.

I would have to disagree on the ability of the SV650 on gravel roads. I had a 2005 SV650. Great bike on pavement, but horrible on gravel roads. I road about 20 miles of gravel once with it. Don't want to do that again! The 650GS is a good compromise bike. Great on road (not as good as SV), but great on gravel and some dirt roads. The Dakar is even better off-road, and still great on the pavement.

No doubt. Who is this guy?

And since all dual sports are, by definition, a compromise, where do you want it to excell (it's strengths) and what are you willing to compromise with (it's weaknesses).

I am assuming that this is another BS post? Is this correct Mark?

Normally I would lock this post, but I liked 1clickhigh's response so much....
