Ok, I admit it.

I'm on a very low budget, but I'm pretty much sickened by watching semi trucks creep up behind me through my little strap on bicycle rear view mirror!

So I was running around town today and found some yama-hooey mirrors for mix and match pricing - SOLD!

Got home and cracked open the "didn't quite fit the way I wanted it to the first time box of stuff" (i.e. risers, beat into submission bark busters) and got busy.

Forgot all about setting my sag, and worked on my cockpit - YAY! Yamahonda mirrors 541814 Can't wait to take her for a spin...

Yamahonda mirrors Img_0612

Hint - when you are looking at "universal" bark busters, don't believe the salesperson! Yamahonda mirrors 423485 Lack of machine shop tools means that us common folk burn the instructions and get out a ball peen hammer and pound them into fitment, mostly...

Yamahonda mirrors Img_0613

Didn't quite make it, did ya griz... Yamahonda mirrors 59444 Yamahonda mirrors 59444 Yamahonda mirrors 59444

So I spend nearly an hour digging through the entire garage, an outbuilding, the back of my Geo, the now dumped on the garage floor buckets of screws, crud and assorted this and that in an attempt to find a bracket, piece of metal, anything to bridge that little gap. Yamahonda mirrors 587450

So what do I find? A forty year old bottle opener, and a plan is hatched (bird brain). Why don't I use the bottle opener as a bracket and when the steering is locked all the way to the left, I can open a bottle of beer with it too Yamahonda mirrors 675814

Keep in mind, the name on the can opener is "Quick and Easy" - Cool!

Yamahonda mirrors Img_0614

What does griz say!? Bull!#&*! This little piece of what must be some super high carbon steel from left over world war II armor plate decided to eat THREE of my drill bits! One cheapo, and two decent ones...

Now I'm pissed because I'll have to buy another good bit just to show this little piece of doody who's boss!

Yamahonda mirrors Img_0615

Never did finish the bracket, got frustrated and decided to put on the risers. Looking forward to trying out the new ergos.

Yamahonda mirrors Img_0616

Going uuuuup! Yamahonda mirrors 129847

Yamahonda mirrors Img_0617

So now I'm pretty sure if I loop it, auger in or otherwise mess up my whole setup is going to get sheared off!!! (crossed fingers)

So there ya go, insomnia, some cheap parts, and choosing to play in the garage instead of watching TV.

Regards,

griz

ok, i'll see if i can remember everything i was going to comment on, in no particular order: try turning your drill bit very slowly on hard stuff and try to keep it cool, an i have to agree with ya about salesmen, anything that comes out of there mouth is 100% bull Yamahonda mirrors 59444 an i agree with you about directions too, real men don't need directions! the old yammy mirrors look just like a factory farkle Yamahonda mirrors 5543 "working" as flyin w put it, on the bike beats watchin tv any day, an finally while i think the bottle opener is a novel idea, you must have heard of twist tops Yamahonda mirrors 601673 keep up the good "work"

I picked these up from Rocky Mountain for like $20.00 two years ago. They were called Tusk 7/8 universal risers. They came with hardened bolts (multiple lengths) so you can use short medium or tall stacks.

I am 6'1" and my problem is I have a long torso, but only 32" inseam. I couldn't stand without feeling like I was going to toss myself over the bars while bent over.

I have a Renthal 666 Desert Bend bars that already are fairly tall. With the risers I am stretching my cables now when fully turned. I'm going to risk it but will need longer cables as soon as I can get the money past my financial auditor (the wife).

I think the original universal Tusk stack was 1 5/8" but not sure about that. The new ones at Rocky Mountain appear to be one piece instead of multiple plates. You might be able to dig around and find them. My two year old part number was 1134270002 but the new ones appear different.

I digress... Spent quite a few beer filled nights sitting on the bike, flopping my hands and arms up and down trying to measure where my natural sitting and standing position was. Decided to keep and use the bits and pieces I have.

I'm happy as long as they are functional, but I need to ride a 100 miles of FS road to tell if they are good to go.

I gave up after throwing a few things around the garage Yamahonda mirrors 587450 I bought a $11.99 bit from NAPA that was the upgraded bit for "hard alloys" and it quit cutting in about five seconds. Rolled the cutting edges using slow speed and cutting oil.

Went to my local hardware store and bought a $4.00 stick of 1/8" mild steel and will make a "L" bracket to bridge the bark busters to the standoff. My "old" hardened craftsman drill bit went through it like butter. Yamahonda mirrors Icon_scratch

Thanks Griz and Backwoods. I like to ride in the attack style position anyway. I have always felt better control with my elbows up. The transission from sitting to standing is getting difficult now too, so anything higher is better! Yamahonda mirrors 5543

Well,

My local mom and pop Napa took the drill bit back "under warranty." I almost feel guilty, but I've never had even a cheapo drill bit go bad so fast.

$12.00 refund = almost 200 miles of fuel for riding
$12.00 refund = camping fee at my favorite spot
$12.00 refund = A six pack and fishing bait
$12.00 refund = patch kit and some J-B weld
$12.00 refund = A good assortment of stainless steel fasteners
$12.00 refund = A gallon of 10-40 oil
$12.00 refund = dynabeads

Rant over.... Yamahonda mirrors Icon_sad

Not sure how tall you need to go, but if I had the money I would have chosen one of the new Rox risers. You can get off the shelf up to 3" and with offset if you want it (3" are in the street category). http://www.roxspeedfx.com/

There was some talk a couple years ago when they first came out about the leverage point being a weak spot on dirt bikes, but I've never heard a failure report and if I were to bounce off my bars I would want them to give at some point. Yamahonda mirrors 241248

Finished an accounting project and really wanted to blow off some steam by finishing my project. Funny how one day things don't go your way and the next everything is hunky-dory (first time I ever typed that, it looks funny...).

Viola:

Which in turn, gets bolted on to here with the bright new shiny fasteners:

That leads to completion of the two year old bark busters I had to pound into shape, fuss and fumble with, cut myself, curse myself, and throw things in frustration to get installed:
