Welcome to the forum, great first post! I believe that abandoned bike you saw was '76 or so Yamaha XS 650. They had a parallel twin 650, an inline 750 triple, and an inline 4 1100. They had a Midnight Special based on both the 750 and 1100. They were all black with gold accents. But I digress...

As far as mirrors go, you can replace the stock ones, but will probably continue breaking them. I have these on my bike and like them alot.

I believe I saw the exact same little yellow saw in the snow on this ride that you posted about a week prior. Didn't see your post until after my adventure, that freaked me out a little bit.
