I've done those same mods to my 650L, plus I added an FMF Q4 can.

The next step will be a cam and going up on the compression. The stock 8.3:1 is pretty low.

And, a pumper style carb - Mikuni or Edelbrock would help it out, but would really go good with cam & piston upgrades.

I'll be waiting a while for those mods.

have you taken off your head pipe and cleaned out the weld drool on the inside? one side of mine had alot of restriction, don't know if i'll notice anything, but it can't hurt.

I haven't done that yet. Probably check it out this Winter.

Like you said, it can't hurt and it's another free mod with the right tools.

ya got any cams in mind? hot cams has one for more midrange & topend, don't know what it does for the lowend just wondering what it will do to reliability? put 6000 miles on mine in 10 days goin to prudoe bay an back in 08 an she was bulletproof, got about 12000 on it now. probably won't do any more long distance rides on the 650, that's why i bought the 990 ktm. so it don't have to be that bulletproof.

Stage 1 - Hotcam

It's compatible with the stock rockers and valve springs. I think the reliabliity will still be there, but it's a trade off - performance vs. reliability.

The hotcam will give us more mid-range and top end, making bottom end feel a bit weaker, but a higher compression pistion will cure that!

I'll be waiting for more miles on mine before I do the 10.5:1 piston, hotcam and pumper carb upgrades.

The R & L baskets are different.

I haven't found an aftermarket basket. I thought maybe Hinson or Barnett would have one, but they show nothing on their websites.

I'll keep my eyes peeled for one.

I had a 650L a few years back and worked it over a bit, I did the Dyno Jet stage 1,Supertrapp and K&N, I also like to run 25% Trick fuel, I use this fuel mix in all my bikes. It really seems to help right off idle and at low RPM, the supertrapp, with the tunability of the disks, for me is hard to beat, anyway set up with this crap helped quite a bit. If I was doing this again today, I'd check into a flywheel weight, and see if an upgraded K&N extreme is available. Oh ya, and try to get 70 or so pounds off it I'll help too....

There is mainly an issue with the pilot jet with a hesitation from an idol. It pulls hard 1/4 throttle an up.

check out daves carb mods. i did the dynojet jet kit also which giver you an adjustable clip on the needle. also grind off the stop on the fuel bowl so you can turn the air screw more than 3/4 of a turn. drill out the two holes in the slide to 5/32 [ i think ? ] or put in a different spring so the slide comes up quicker. all in daves carb mods. i'm still running the stock 52.5 pilot, an don't seem to have any hesitation issues.

Am at: pilot 55- main 160- and 4th position on needle. Seems to be the best combo yet but still have a slight hesitation when I crack the throttle. Gahhh Am going to try the 58 pilot and see how that goes.... Thanks for all the insight, I am finding it is mostly trial and error when it comes to jetting......... :Slaphead:

did you grind off the XR650L MODS? 59444 stop on the float bowl so you can get more than 7/8 of a turn on the air screw?? i fiddle with mine a bit at different elevations. thinking about putting a cam in mine this winter XR650L MODS? 675814 your muffler might flow better than my stock one. i tryed the 160 main, but was too much at higher elevations, throttle response felt sluggish.

yeah the tab on the mixture screw is ground down. The exhaust has a nice bark to it wink

A cam eh? Ported and polished head would go with that nicely.... big

it's all in the wrist, i have gotten 50+ just gently cruising down dirt roads. offroad riding i have never really tryed to check. when cruising at highway speeds [60-70 mph]the ol girl kind of sucks the fuel, usually around 40mpg. give or take .

I have never had very good gas milage out of my 2000. I range from 30 to maybe 38 mpg at best. 26 mpg does sound high to me scratch

I have the IMS 4 gallon tank. I was doing some research on it last night and it seems to trap unusable fuel up front in the shroud part of the tank. (have to tip bike over to transfer the fuel) The question is how much fuel is trapped... I was hopeing to at least get 150 miles out of a tank. I do have a case of "wide open" probably more than some but to me that's more fun. big 26 miles to the gallon dosnt seem right even for running it hard. Does jetting affect milage that drasticly? dunno

i have a clarke 4 gal. tank an usually hit reserve at 120-150 miles depending on the throttle. there is quite a bit of fuel trapped in the other side of the tank, i usually put the kick stand down and lean it over while pulling on the bars so the front wheel is off the ground. you can hear it running across the tank. when i was coming down from prudoe bay i had to get that fuel to make it to the next fuel stop. 250 mile stretch, an i had an extra 2 gallon can. made it just bearly. but still bike was loaded pretty heavy with stuff, and my fat ass. was running alot at 70+ mph. the elevation is just above sea level, so bike was running good. 250 miles-6 gallons total fuel=41.666666 mpg. a ya , i'd have to say your bike sucks fuel like a mo-fo. XR650L MODS? 391375 have you pulled your spark plug to see how it's burning??

Not since the last jet swap. The next time I run the tank out ill have to get all the fuel to the one side of the tank and see how many more miles i get out of it. pig
