| Oh mighty wisdom of the internetty... How am I supposed to install these? My right footpeg has the old Honda shim and washer upgrade so my stock flange bolt (rearward) has a hardened washer on it. My hardened replacement does not. It seems to me, mechanically speaking, the more surface area I engage the better, so I am inclined to use the washer. What do you think? My stock forward bolt has no lock washers but the hardened replacement does. Do I offset the lock washer "cuts" and just snug 'em up to torque specs? What do you think? This is a BRP right footpeg fix from advrider mphoppe (and his pictures of the fasteners - thanks ) also blessed by the legend in my own mind Mr. gaspipe. What say ye to this conundrum? | |

| Hi Griz, I don't know, but I would use a washer on each bolt like it appears you did. I haven't done this to mine yet, but I have kept checking them for tightness. I'll probably buy some hard bolts, but wat is that double washer thing with the tab hanging down? Is that stock or part of the upgrade? And did you use Loctite? | |

| From an engineering standpoint, (engineer told me, lol). Lock washers don't do shit. As long as a bolt is torqued down to spec, you don't need a lock washer. Can't remember the source he got this from since it's been more then 5years, but it was from some journal of sorts not just pulled out his arse (he's british) *I personally like lock washers and use them **edit, the more washers, even lock washers, you use the less torque there will be on the bolt. | What kind of lockwasher doesn't work, the split lock washer, like griz has, or one of many other designs or all of them?
Why would more washers reduce torque? Because of increased friction? What if the 2 washers were coated with Teflon and actually reduced friction compared to the bolt head by itself against the edge of the hole? | |

| He specifically mentioned the split design. We still used them building aerial work platforms thou. *i think you are playing with me on the next one think if you were torquing something with an extension. Now picture that extension 10x longer. Flex and all that. Same thing. **can someone back me up? i'm just guessing here. | |

The metal shim (50616-MBN-670) between the casting and frame, and the washer (90528-023-000) is installed flat side down under the rear bolt are both part of the original factory fix for the footpegs. I can't explain the mechanical engineering behind them, but last time I checked my bolts I thought I twisted a head. That's why I went with the hardened replacements. I figured I would replace them before I screwed up the threads and had to do the drill through method. I also used 45 ft. lbs. after contact instead of 40, but that's just me because my bike didn't even snug up until almost 40 ft. lbs. - Inspector wrote:

The replacement bolts are slightly longer than stock so they engage more threads. The washers are to prevent the end of the bolt from bottoming out. I contacted the bolt seller and he said some BRP's have different depths. I'll let you know if my footpeg falls off tomorrow when I take Big Jer and MDC (mechanically declined cousin) up into the hills behind my place. I also used red 271 loctite based on my old friends at The Pig Pen | |
