My solution to the horizontal or vertical license plate mounting question....why not both! My father and I prototyped this mount today. It allows you to run the plate either vertically while on the trail (keeping the bike nice and thin) and within seconds convert back to horizontal to be legal for road use.
There are 6 large rare earth magnets imbedded into the mount that "lock" the plate into the horizontal or vertical position. The assy pivots on a metal through pin which also acts as a catch so you don't loose your plate if you snag it on something hard.
There are a few tweaks that I will be making to the second version and then I would like to test it on the trail to make sure it is solid and holds up to trail abuse. After I get the bugs worked out and they are proven I'll be making some to sell.
Here's a few pics of the Twist-A-Plate mounted on my 530XCW.
Vertical
to Horizontal in seconds
And a short video of the plate in action

I'll list them up for sale here when I get them ready...still want to make a couple small revisions and test it thouraly out on the trail. Not sure what I'll have to charge to make it worth while yet either, need to figure up the cost of parts/materials still.
Thanks,

Put a small electric motor on it and call it the "Propel-o-plate". Troy341
